All eyes on the Florida Legislature
Each year, Florida elected officials convene in Tallahassee to consider dozens of bills that will impact Floridians and the natural environment. The 60-day session offers lawmakers the chance to chart a powerful and impactful course for issues like water quality, conservation, and environmental justice. But it also leaves the door open for bad bills and special interest influence.
Just a couple weeks into the 2022 Florida Legislative session, we’re tracking several bad bills that threaten Florida’s fragile waterways, and a few silver linings that are giving us hope. During this Clean Water Conversation, VoteWater Executive Director Gil Smart will join Friends of the Everglades Executive Director Eve Samples for a conversation breaking down a highlights reel of the worst of the worst and the most optimistic.
Eve Samples joined Friends of the Everglades as Executive Director in early 2020 after two decades as a journalist, columnist, and editor, recognizing an opportunity to meld her passion for environmental reporting with Friends’ legacy of grassroots advocacy and education.
Gil Smart was a high-profile newspaper columnist and investigative reporter, often covering Florida’s many environmental follies, for more than three decades before joining Friends of the Everglades as Policy Director. He took on the additional role of Executive Director for VoteWater in December 2021.
Friends of the Everglades is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and its sister organization, VoteWater, is a 501(c)(4) nonprofit.
